Kasumi Morimura, a Japanese-born artist deeply influenced by surrealism, draws inspiration from the realms of children’s literature, dreams and traditional Japanese painting. Having spent half of her life in Europe, her work is a unique fusion of East and West, where flowers, animals, and imaginary creatures come to life. With a background in art history and textile arts, and experience as a costume designer, Morimura explores unconventional beauty and symbolism.
Her artistic influences range from fairy tales, the enigmatic "Tibetan Book of the Dead," to Lewis Carroll, the Victorian-era author of Alice in Wonderland, as another significant muse. Carroll, a pioneering photographer, mathematician, and linguist, deeply impacts her work. Morimura holds a bachelor’s degree from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and a master’s degree in Textile Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London.
